Interactive gaming company to lease another 60,000 square feet in Culver City

The company likes adventure, so dogs are welcome at work and snacks are free.

Scopely, an interactive entertainment company and mobile-games publisher, has agreed to lease 60,000 square feet of space in Culver City, a move that will more than double its Los Angeles footprint by 2020.

The company will occupy the second, third and fourth floors of a new four-story building at 8888 Washington Blvd. that’s set to be completed late next year. The building is an expansion of Runyon Group’s 130,000-square-foot Platform project, which opened in 2016.

That flagship property, a mile to the east on Washington Boulevard, is home to 50,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space and 80,000 square feet of creative and office space. Scopely is collaborating with the Los Angeles-based real estate firm to ensure the new space meets its needs.

Jacob Bobek of CBRE represented Scopely in the lease transaction, and  Joseph Miller and David Fishbein of Runyon Group represented their company.

Scopely leases 28,000 square feet in the Hayden Tract area, half a mile from Platform, and it will temporarily occupy 4,000 additional square feet there while the Washington Boulevard building is under construction.

Company culture

The new space on Washington Boulevard will align with Scopely’s corporate culture, according to company spokeswoman Brittany Geldmacher.

“One of our culture tenets is to ’embrace the adventure,’ and we have a very collaborative working environment, which welcomes dogs, includes snacks to keep you recharged and encourages everyone to wear what makes them feel most comfortable,” Geldmacher said via email.

More hiring

Scopely currently employs 250 people in Los Angeles, but that will ramp up when the new facility comes online. The company didn’t reveal how many additional employees it will seek.

Founded in 2011, Scopely has occupied its L.A. headquarters since June 2015. In late 2017, it extended its presence to Barcelona, leasing 7,000 square feet of office space for a growing international team. That operation now has more than 75 employees.

The company has grown exponentially since its inception, a trend that continues with the recent launch of two new games: “Star Trek Fleet Command” and “Looney Tunes World of Mayhem.” The games can be accessed through the App Store or Google Play.

Walter Driver, Scopely’s co-founder, chairman and co-CEO, said the additional space is needed.

“This beautiful new space will allow us to continue to scale our physical presence to align with our rapidly expanding product portfolio and growing team,” Driver said in a statement.

Heavy-duty investors

Scopely has raised more than $250 million in financing from venture capitalists, tech luminaries and others. They include Greenspring Associates, Greycroft Partners and Revolution Growth, in addition to Kobe Bryant, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Peter Guber, CEO of Mandalay Entertainment.

The company’s expansion speaks to Culver City’s growing influence as a thriving Southern California submarket, fueled heavily by an ever-increasing demand for office space.

HBO recently signed a 15-year lease to locate its headquarters at Ivy Station, a mixed-use development that’s under construction in the city. Apple announced last year that it agreed to lease a new 128,000-square-foot building in Culver City that’s expected to open in late 2019, and Amazon occupies 280,000 square feet of space at Culver Studios.

“All of these companies are able to recruit talent from the around the city … downtown, the South Bay and the Westside,” CBRE’s Bobek said. “The train line comes right through there and there are restaurants, retail and coffee shops all within walking distance.”
